Illustration Friday: The Blues

Sometimes the blues come early in life....

I did this for Illustration Friday and although its okay with me (since I'm still 'learnin') I decided not to post it over there. I sent it to myself in an email so I could see how it looks on the pc first and it looks too "worked on". I don't mind posting it here but I'm not going to put the link over on the other site. (I used a black and white photo from a old book about Johns Island (North Carolina I think) folks back in the 60s. Desparate poverty.)

I think you did a good job. I would have linked it. I'm guessing from what you said, that you were still learning, that you are use to oils and is it that watercolors are a new medium for use to you...I guess I'm confused because you do real good with watercolor. Just tonight I was looking at the portrait you did of dad and me and I still can't get over how good you captured him...

anyway, I like it a lot. Good to see you painting some more too...

We will have to do another challenge one of these days if you want to..i see so many cool things I want to paint.

What I've posted here within the last several months (watercolor) has been my introduction to watercolor. I started out drawing many decades ago (early 20s)... drawing something every once in a while. I dabbled in oil paints for a while, but would try something a couple of times a year. Then a decade of nothing. When I "retired early" (quit my job) my kids seemed to think I should do something. It worried them that I just wanted to sit on my ass. Thats when my son offered to buy whatever I needed, etc. (you've been thru it with me)

I took freshman art in high school. (the teacher did not mesh with teenagers.) Then we lived next door to an art student and I watched him do a drawing. Thats when I saw how shadows makes things look right. Drew things for a few months and then life distracted me. In my late twenties I took a life drawing class. Studio time with a model. And thats about it.

I should have made this a blog entry, huh, its so long.

I'm up for a challenge whenever you want to do one. It looks like you're going to be busy for a while though...doing that family book.

oh no..that family book is something that will evolve after a few years..I will work on it here and there. I would go crazy if that was the only thing I created....

I've go so many other types of art i want to try...different mediums, styles, subjects...

so I've got the rest of my life..hahaha.

my book will probably be done when the last grandkid goes to college...if I'm around that long.

thanks for the explanation..I really wanted to know all that too, but didn't want to ask all those questions...

with basically no training, I'm really impressed..

Well, I'm impressed too! I thought you had studied and had taken classes at some point in your life ... so now I see that you just have a natural talent! I like this one you put up. I think you captured a "feeling" with it.
