That's what Darius declared to me as he came running up to my car. "I'm five years old now!!" He was very proud of his new age.
A corner of the cake mom had made for him. D. is into all the usual super heros plus some that I've never heard of. Spiderman cake with web, a candle shaped in a number five, and some kind of "hero" throwing a punch.
I love the look Darius has on his face in this picture. He looks very proud of himself. The little sweetie!
Time to blow out the candle and everyone was willing to help.
Pizza and cake outside please.
Darius looked like he enjoyed his birthday, but his mom was a little ticked off and I don't blame her. No one else showed up for his party. There were the three kids of her friend's (where the party was being held) and me. I feel a little sad because of her disappointment, but there's nothing I can do about it. Next year Darius should have some classmates he can invite to his party.
Oh... and it didn't rain on us. Thank you!

Birthday Boy
Darius' birthday party is this afternoon. Its being held at a friend's home so that the kids have a huge backyard to run around and play. So... yesterday was the start of our rainy season. Backyard. Rain. Kids. I'm holding out for a break in the rain this afternoon. We'll just have to wait and see, but I sure hope it happens. My daughter (aka 'mom') has always been big on birthday parties. There has been a few times when she was disappointed. She invites everyone she can think of but often they don't show up. Its sad to see her disappointment, but its one of the things life teaches us.

Got Burro?
"I have a sweet little burro. Her name is Siya."
"We would go everywhere together... as long as that's where she wanted to go."
"Today my burro went that way."
"Now I can't find her. Have you seen my burro, Siya?"

Kool Aid and Potato Chips
Darius stayed with me Monday night. Well, actually Monday all day into Tuesday all day. And look... we're both alive! I tried to get a few candid shots but Mr Ham-it-up wasn't too cooperative.
He was semi quiet when I stuck some kool aid and potato chips in front of him. He wore the koolaid around his mouth like a badge of honor. Burp.
The burp was followed by a semi cheesy grin.
Coccoon, the second generation. D wanted to sleep in the front room and since it was just him (brother did not come over) I made up a pallet for him. He stayed on it for the most part, but occasionally rolled off.
We had a good time considering there's not much for him to do around here. Especially since his brother wasn't around.

"You was wrong, gramma" he said with a grin
"You was wrong, gramma" Darius said with a grin. A grin of self-satisfaction. And he was right. I was wrong.
I had the plastic garbage bin in the kitchen turned over so no one would use it because we were out of garbage bags. Darius turned it over so I explained why I wanted it upside down. He reached for the drawer where the bags are kept. "I'll get it, gramma."
"No, Darius. We don't have any garbage bags. That's why I have the bin turned over." And I closed the drawer.
That's when I had the idea to show him... to show him there were no garbage bags in the drawer. You know where this is going, right? I moved a couple of items and there was the box containing a couple of garbage bags.
I turned to Darius and said with wonder "Hey, you were right! And I was wrong!" His eyebrows went up just a bit and a sly grin slid across his face. He doesn't hear that often, cause you know, I'm seldom if ever wrong. Right? Never mind.
Anyway, it has pleased him beyond measure that I was wrong and he was right.
"Stick with me, kid. You'll be right a lot of times."

Birthday Boy
My grandson Darius called me last night to tell me about his scooter he got for his birthday. He was so excited about it. I was excited too, because we had another actual back and forth conversation. He contributed to it!!! The conversation.
His birthday is today but mom gave him his present yesterday so he had something to ride along with his brother. She got him a large wheeled scooter so it stays balanced for longer periods of time, thus is more fun.
He's four today. His brother will be three in several months. Speaking of his brother, I talked to him a few nights ago. And, boy, did he talk. Jabber Jabber Jabber Jabber... and I couldn't understand one word, but there wasn't any pause in the conversation.
Bottom line, though... it was fun to hear the excitement in Darius' voice.
